Galloway named Gatorade Track & Field Player of the Year

Sophie Galloway has been named Kentucky’s 2021 Girls Track & Field Player of the Year, the fourth year she has earned the distinction. This is the 36th year that Gatorade has honored the nation’s best high school athletes with the award.

The award is not only for athletic excellence but academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field. Galloway is now a finalist for the prestigious Gatorade National Girls Track & Field Player of the Year award to be announced in July.

Galloway swept her events – the 100-meter hurdles, long jump and triple jump – at the Class 3A KHSAA State Championships in June, setting a new state meet record in the 100 meter hurdles (14.29) and broke her own state record in the triple jump. Her triple jump of 41 feet, 7.75 inches currently ranks fourth in the nation and she wrapped up her outstanding track and field career with eight state titles before she heads to compete for the University of Tennessee.

She is currently at the University of Oregon’s Hayward Field in Eugene and competing in the heptathlon, an event she will compete in at the University of Tennessee. The heptathlon consists of seven events – 100m hurdles, high jump, shot put, 200m, long jump, javelin throw and 800m.
