Straight set win over CCA opens the Lady Marshals season

Senior Halle Langhi was putting points up for the Lady Marshals at the net and behind the service line in their 3-0 win over CCA to open the 2021 season.

A 3-0 season opening win over Community Christian Academy for the Lady Marshals was also the first win for new head coach Alyssa Finnegan. Finnegan played volleyball for Murray State University and most recently coached the PU5H Volleyball Club as well as as assistant coach at Murray High before coming to Marshall County.

Seven seniors will lead the Lady Marshals this season including Halle Langhi, a 2020 All-Region and All-District Tournament Team selection, Ashley Bremmerkamp who also earned All-District Tournament Team honors last season along with veteran players Alyssa McClain, Neely Northcott, Laney Evans, Macy Inglish and Hannah Smith.

The Lady Marshals three set win over CCA didn’t come easy. Two kills by Langhi gave the Lady Marshals a 3-2 lead, then she led the Lady Marshals to a 12-2 lead behind nine straight serves. CCA cut the lead to 13-9 but that was as close as it would get in Marshall County’s 25-16 first set win.

CCA ran up a 10-2 lead in set two leading to a time out by Coach Finnegan. The Lady Marshals scored the next two points out of the time out and went on to tie the set up at 14 all. The Lady Warriors went back up by one and held the lead until 19 all. The next eight points to close out set two 25-19 were courtesy of another run of eight serves by Langhi.

Marshall County held the edge throughout set three but not by much, CCA hanging in there to close it to two at 15-13 and four points at 21-17 before the 25-21 third set Lady Marshals win.

“I think there was a bit of nerves here for the first home game”, Coach Finnegan said. “We didn’t play our best. We played in two other scrimmages and played a lot better than that so I think it was just getting the first game jitters out of the way.”

Langhi finished with 12 kills followed by Sarah Bremmerkamp with six, Tori Shaw with four and Northcott had four. The 24 assists were split between Annie Beard with 14 and Evans with 10. Langhi’s proficient night at the service line yielded eight aces.

Up next is a trip to Paducah Tilghman to play the Lady Tornados on Thursday in what will be their season opener.
