Public information meeting scheduled for safety improvements on U.S. 45 at KY 408 and KY 1288 intersections

PADUCAH, Ky. (Nov. 4, 2019) The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) is planning safety projects along U.S. 45 at intersections with KY 408 in northern Graves County and KY 1288 in southern McCracken County.

A public information meeting has been scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 12 from 5:30-6:30 p.m., CST, at Community Fellowship Baptist Church near the U.S. 45/KY 408 intersection to share plans with area residents. There will be a presentation at the beginning of the meeting at approximately 5:30 p.m.

KYTC District 1 Chief Engineer Kyle Poat is urging anyone who travels through these two intersections to attend the meeting.

“Using a number of traffic safety strategies, our engineers have worked diligently to reduce the elevated crash rate at these intersections,” Poat said. “We have now developed a highway safety project using features that have effectively improved safety at intersections experiencing similar issues. We’ll provide a presentation on the project and accept comments during the public meeting.”

Poat emphasized that the brief presentation on the Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP) project will include specific information about traffic flow at each intersection. After the presentation, KYTC engineers, design staff, and consultants working on the safety projects will be available to answer questions and accept comments.

The proposed safety projects along U.S. 45 at KY 408 in Graves County and U.S. 45 at KY 1288 in McCracken County will restrict left turns at each of these locations and direct traffic to a dedicated turn lane with a modified U-turn (R-Cut), which aims to provide safety for all users of these intersections.

The U.S. 45/KY 408 intersection is at Graves County U.S. 45 mile point 25.361 and KY 408 mile point 8.047. The U.S. 45/KY 1288 intersection is at McCracken County U.S. 45 mile point 2.592 and KY 1288/Lovelaceville-Florence Station Road mile point 0.0.  Approximately 14,300 vehicles travel through each of these intersections in an average day.

The public meeting will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 12 at Community Fellowship Baptist Church at 90 State Route 408 West in Hickory, Ky., from 5:30-6:30 p.m., CST.
