Marshall County’s track and field teams competed in the Area 1 Championships on Saturday at Paducah Tilghman High School. The Marshall County athletes turned in eight first place performances and 23 top five finishes.
The team title of the meet for the boys between Marshall County and McCracken County came down to the final race of the day. McCracken County took the win in the 4 x 400 and the Marshals came in third to give the Mustangs the win. Calloway County took first among the girls’ teams and Marshall County placed second.
Two individual and two relay team first place finishes were recorded by the girls’ team. Presley Gallimore won the 400 meters in one minute flat and Izzy Washburn took the win in pole vault with 9-0.
The 4 x 200 relay team took first with Allie Burkeen, Charleigh Duncan, Izzy Washburn and Presley Gallimore and set a new school record time of 1:47.08, breaking the previous record of 1:47.88 set in 2012. The 4 x 400 relay team made up of Jessica Reed, Charleigh Duncan, Eden Sandlin and Presley Gallimore finished first.
In long distance events, Addison Lyles finished second in the 1600 meters and third in the 3200 meters. Lyles, along with Calloway County’s Reese Settle, the two top long-distance runners in Region 1, battled Fort Campbell seventh grade cross country and track phenom Emmie Underwood in both races. Settle took the win in the 1600 and Underwood willed her way to a win in the 3200.
Jessica Reed and Eden Sandlin both finished in the top five in the 800 meters. Reed took second in 2:29.96 and Sandlin fourth in 2:32.53. Delaney Miller placed fifth in high jump with 4-6. Mia McGregor finished second in pole vault to complete a 1-2 sweep in that event. The 4 x 100 relay team placed second and the 4 x 800 finished third to wrap up the girl’s top fives.
Four individual first place medals for the boys’ team were earned by Deegan Croley, a double winner in the shot put (52-11) and discus (140-6), Kobey Yates took the win in the 3200 meters with a time of 10:20.68 and Jordan Clapp won the triple jump with 43-10.75.
Top five performances were turned in by Owen Futrell with third in the 800 meters in 2:03.08. Tyler Orlandi finished fifth in the 200 meters in 21.93, Jeremy Jaco placed fourth in the 300 meter hurdles in 43.03 and Kobey Yates took fifth in the 1600 meters in 5:02.04.
The 4 x 400 and 4 x 800 relay teams placed third and the 4 x 200 took fifth. The Marshals 4 x 100 relay which consistently places in the top two in meets, suffered an unfortunate interference by another team on the first handoff which ended their chances for a potential top finish.
