Marshals advance to FNB Holiday Classic championship game

Marshall County Basketball is hosting the FNB Holiday Classic this week at Reed Conder Gymnasium. The Marshals won their first two games of the tournament 75-42 over Huntingdon, Tenn. and 65-56 over Douglass, Ga. to advance to Friday’s championship game against McCracken County.

The Mustangs defeated New Faith Christian Academy on Wednesday 90-67 and Columbia Academy, Tenn. on Thursday 60-41 to advance to play the Marshals for the second time in just a week. The Marshals beat the Mustangs 59-51 on December 15.

In Wednesday’s win over Huntingdon, the Marshals led 14-9 at the end of the first quarter and pushed their lead out to 14 points at halftime on a buzzer beating 3-pointer by Cash Henson.

Alex Staples opened the second half with a 3-pointer to give the Marshals a 41-24 lead and they were off and running, outscoring Huntingdon 37-18 in the half to pick up the 75-42 victory.

The Marshals were led by junior Tommy Robertson with 18 points. They combined for seven threes in the game led by Kyzer Phillips with two. Huntingdon’s Caleb Ezell had 23 points including five 3-pointers.

Marshall County beat a good Douglass, Ga. team on Thursday to earn a spot in Friday’s 4:00 championship game. Douglass beat Christian County on Wednesday to advance to meet the Marshals.

Staples scored 17 for the Marshals followed by Phillips with 14. Phillips dropped in four of the Marshals seven threes in the game.

The Marshals held a 17-13 lead at the end of the first quarter, led by Robertson’s eight points. They outscored Douglass by four in the second quarter to push the lead to eight points at 32-24 at halftime.

Staples, Phillips and Ryan Stokes combined for 19 points in the third quarter to maintain a five point lead for the Marshals going into the fourth quarter. They went on to outscore Douglass by four in the final eight minutes to win 65-56.
