Marshals drop Comets 72-41, off to 4-0 start

Cole Mills (14) drives past Carlisle County’s Isaiah Keeling (23) in Monday’s win. Mills put up 20 points to help lead the Marshals to their 4-0 start the season.

Led by Cole Mills with 20 points, the Marshals had four players in double figures including Kole Sedlock with 12 and 11 points each from Quinn Smith and Wade Moore in Monday’s 72-41 win over Carlisle County.

As balanced as the offense was, the defensive effort was equally impressive, holding Garrett Hayden – who dropped 70 points on Paducah Tilghman last Friday and 31 in their season opener against St. Mary – to 20 points.

“We’re just pretty efficient right now”, Head Coach Terry Birdsong said in post-game comments. “They’re just fun to coach.”

Hayden dropped in the first basket of the night and the Marshals followed it up with the next eight points – six from Mills and Smith with two. They led 17-9 at the end of the first quarter – all nine points by the Comets coming from Hayden.

The first three baskets of the second quarter belonged to Mills on his way to 14 in the first half. The final two of the quarter were made by Smith to send the Marshals into the half up 34-17. Hayden had 13 first half points for the Comets, getting a little help from Bradyn Williams and Isaiah Keeling who each had a basket.

Moore opened the second half with a 3-pointer followed by two points from Colby Schroader to push the Marshals lead to 22 points. Sedlock scored the next six straight, but the Comets hung in with three 3-pointers in the quarter from Zach Grogan to help trim the Marshals lead to 16 points going into the fourth.

Five different Marshals scored in the fourth quarter, highlighted by a four-point play by Mills who was fouled on a made 3-pointer and two from behind the arc by Trey Wall who finished with three 3-pointers in the 31-point win.

The Marshals improve to 4-0 and it was the first loss for the Comets who drop to 2-1. Friday, the Marshals will host Graves County (2-1) in a double-header with the tip at 7:30 following the Lady Marshals game.
