Marshals beat Muhlenberg County 36-7 to earn first district win

Marshall County’s leading rusher, Aiden Dunigan, scored three touchdowns in the Marshals 36-7 district win over Muhlenberg County.

Marshall County and Muhlenberg County last played each other 11 years ago in the 2012 season and the Marshals won that game 20-16. This was the fifth game between the two teams dating back to 2009 and at the final horn, the Marshals picked up their fourth win over the Mustangs and first district win since October 2016 by a final score of 36-7.

Electing to receive after winning the opening coin toss, the Marshals proceeded to score on their opening drive. The 58-yard drive culminated in an 11-yard touchdown run by Aiden Dunigan and with Logan Parker’s extra point kick, the Marshals held an early 7-0 lead.

After punting on their next two possessions, the Marshals found the endzone again on a 45-yard pass from quarterback Neyland Jezik to Toren Redmon and with Parker’s PAT, the lead was 14-0 in the second quarter.

Following a Mustangs punt, the Marshals had very short field position and took advantage. An 18-yard run by Dunigan to the one-yard line set up his one-yard touchdown. Parker added the extra point for a 21-0 lead.

On the Mustangs next possession, Gavin Clark forced a fumble that was picked up by Dunigan and he ran it back 27 yards for his third touchdown of the game. The Marshals two-point conversion was good for a 29-0 lead.

The first half ended on a pass interception by Luke Webber at the one-yard line. On the final play of the half, Dunigan broke loose for a long run and was taken town at midfield.

Marshall County opened the second half with their fifth touchdown of the game. A reverse play from Jackson Mahmet to Jordan Clapp went 31 yards into the endzone and with a 36-0 lead, the running clock was enforced.

Muhlenberg County avoided the shutout with a touchdown in the fourth quarter when Gavin Carruba scored from 14 yards out.

In unofficial stats, Dunigan rushed for 114 yards on 10 carries and scored two offensive and one defensive touchdown. Webber had five carries for 58 yards. Jezik was 6-of-9 in passing for 68 yards and a touchdown. Redmon led in receiving with 51 yards on two receptions and scored one touchdown.

Next Friday, Marshall County (2-4) travel to play Owensboro (3-3) and will looking to pick up their second district win.
