Oakley’s two homers not enough against the Mustangs

Evan Oakley led the Marshals against McCracken County with two home runs in the third and fifth innings, four RBIs and scored two runs.

McCracken County’s 18-6 win over the Marshals on Monday in Draffenville extends their current win-streak to 11 and they improve to 19-4. The win in six innings was the 13th of their 19 wins this season that a game hasn’t gone the full seven innings and they have out-scored their opponents 212-56.

The 18 runs was their most this season but the Marshals six runs tied for most given up so far by the Mustangs.

McCracken was led by Ben Higdon, a University of Memphis commit, who went 4-for-4 with a double, home run and grand slam that brought in seven runs. Higdon leads the state in hits with 41, is sixth in doubles with 11, ninth in RBIs with 34 and his 33 runs ranks ninth.

Higdon and Rivers Moffat led off with doubles in the top of the first inning which led to McCracken’s early 2-0 lead. The Marshals tied it in the bottom of the inning when they loaded the bases on three walks off pitcher Eli James. The two runs scoring on a ground out RBI by Evan Oakley and Chase Hayden sacrifice.

The Mustangs scored 10 runs in the next two innings, highlighted by a grand slam by Grant Godwin in the top of the second and Higdon’s grand slam in the top of the third.

In the bottom of the third, Evan Oakley hit a solo home run, his first of two in the game. The second a two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth and the senior finished the game with four RBIs.

James got the win over three and two thirds innings. The sophomore struck out four and allowed three runs and four hits.

In eight days, the Marshals will get another chance at the Mustangs in their next game on the schedule in Paducah on Tuesday, May 8.
