Marshals earn 57-48 win over Massac County in Thursday’s Hoopfest game

Marshall County senior Aaron Reed scored 18 points with 12 rebounds to help lead the Marshals to a 57-48 win over Massac County in the second game of Thursday’s opening session of the 2017 Hoopfest. Reed’s performance earned him the Most Valuable Player award.

An early 5-0 lead by the Marshals on a basket by Matt French and 3-pointer by Tyler Powell was wiped out on two straight three’s by Massac County’s Jase Mizell and Matthew Yates to put the Patriots up 6-5. Skyler Smith’s three put the Marshals back up by two, tied again on a basket by Cade Burgess before a three by Austin Riley gave Marshall County an 11-8 lead to end the first quarter.

The Marshals extended their lead to as much as seven in the second quarter at 26-19 before Massac County scored the final six points of the half to cut their lead to one at halftime.

Two straight dunks by Reed fired things up and put the Marshals in the lead 34-27 in the third quarter. The Patriots cut it to three and then to one at 36-35 before four straight points by Reed put the Marshals back up by five, going on to lead 43-37 at the end of the quarter.

Massac County’s Isaiah Thompson opened the fourth quarter with two straight slams of his own to tie the game at 43-43 before Powell’s third 3-pointer put the Marshals up by three with three and half minutes left to play. A three by Mizell for the Patriots tied the game again at 46 all before the Marshals finished the game out on an 11-2 run fueled by five points from Matt French and six straight free throws in the final 38.5 seconds by Skyler Smith.

Behind Reed’s 18 points, also in double figures was Powell with 13 points and Smith added 11. Massac County was led by Julian Russell with 11 points.

The Marshals will play Lexington Catholic in Saturday’s 5:15 game.
