Lady Marshals open Hoopfest with 57-26 win over Massac County

In their first game of the season, the Marshall County Lady Marshals defeated Massac County 57-26 in the opening game of the 2017 Marshall County Hoopfest under first-year Head Coach Martin Clapp. The Lady Marshals never trailed after opening the game on a 5-0 lead following free throws by Tera Colson and a 3-pointer from Cayson Conner who led all scorers with 13 points in the win.

Leading 9-4, Layne Pea dropped in two straight three’s to put the Lady Marshals up 15-4 and they finished the first quarter out on a 19-6 lead. The team added 17 more points in the second quarter to lead 36-17 at halftime, led in scoring in the quarter by three freshman, Pea with five points and Conner and Kinley Edwards with four a piece.

Lorin Powell opened the second half with a basket and free to put the Lady Marshals up by 22 points on their way to a 26 point lead at the end of the third quarter and added nine more to the board in the fourth quarter behind five points from Tera Colson in their 57-26 win.

Four Lady Marshals were in double figures – Conner led with 13 followed by Pea, Colson and Edwards with 11 points each. Edwards began her Marshall County High School career with a double-double adding 11 rebounds to go along with her 11 points, earning the freshman the Most Valuable Player award.

Massac County was led in scoring by Farrah Castleman with eight points. The Lady Patriots were hurt by turnovers with 23, which the Lady Marshals converted into 29 points.

The Lady Marshals will tip-off again in the Hoopfest Saturday morning at 9:00 a.m. against Carterville, IL.

Kinley Edwards was awarded Most Valuable Player by former Lady Marshals Head Coach Howard Beth and Marshall County Principal Patricia Greer.
