Graves County, Victory Rock Prep win in Thursday’s Hoopfest

Graves County and Victory Rock Prep, Florida emerged winners in the third and fourth games in Thursday’s Hoopfest.

The reigning Region One champion Eagles led University Heights Academy by 10 points at the end of the first quarter but a 21-point second quarter by UHA drew the Blazers to within five points (32-27) at halftime.

Behind 34 points from guard Kyky Tandy, UHA out-scored Graves County 39-37 in the second half but came up short, falling to the Eagles 69-65. Tandy has strong interest from several schools including Western Kentucky University, whose head coach Rick Stansbury was on hand to watch the junior play.

The Eagles had five players in double-figures including Brenden Young whose 13 points and 23 rebounds earned a Most Valuable Player award. Young’s 23 rebounds set a new Hoopfest record, breaking the old record of 21 set in 2003 by Oak Hill Academy player Dayshawn Wright.

Sunrise Christian’s Malik Hall (25) had 11 points and 10 rebounds in their 59-55 loss to Victory Rock Prep.

Victory Rock Prep, Florida defeated Sunrise Christian, Kansas 59-55 in a thrilling come-from-behind victory. Trailing 26-23 at halftime and by five points at the end of the third quarter, Victory Rock Prep out-scored Sunrise Christain 20-11 in the fourth quarter to take the win.

Victory Rock Prep was led in scoring by University of South Florida commit, Michael Durr, with 14 points and seven rebounds. Sunrise Christian’s N’Faly Dante led with 12 points and 14 rebounds. The sophomore already has several Division I offers from Kansas, LSU and Oklahoma State.
