Confrontation causes shutdown of work at new middle school

Construction interruptionBENTON – UPDATE: Robert Nord, 69, of Benton has been charged with Terroristic Threatening 3rd Degree following a warrant served by Captain Brett Edwards of the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department. He was lodged in the Marshall County Detention Center.

A complaint against workmen and comments made by the complainer led to a temporary shutdown of work Thursday morning at the new South Marshall Middle School site.

The Marshall County Sheriff’s Office said it responded to a call regarding an incident, and Marshall County Schools Superintendent Trent Lovett confirmed that there was a confrontation.

“Someone that lives in the vicinity made some comments that were taken seriously,” Lovett said of the incident at the site, southwest of Benton on the J.R. Gray Bypass.

Lovett did not identify the person who confronted workers, nor was a specific complaint against the workmen reported.

“There are some ongoing issues – mud on the road, comments that [workers] turned around in someone’s driveway,” Lovett said.

Unidentified sources from work crews also stated that muddy conditions at the jobsite have been hindering work and contributed to Thursday’s shutdown. The site is set to be shut down on Friday as well.

The new school is being built as a replacement for both the Benton and South Marshall middle schools.
