Marshals earn 13-1 district win over Calloway County

Ty Davenport connected on this pitch for a two run single in the first inning that brought in the Marshals first two runs of the game in their 13-1 win over Calloway County.

A four game skid for the Marshals ended Tuesday with a 13-1 district win over Calloway County. After a 4-0 start to the season, the Marshals dropped three games over the weekend to Cape Central, Mo. 11-7, Windsor, Mo. 8-5 and Central Magnet School, Tenn. 10-4. Their fourth straight loss came on Monday 3-2 to undefeated Paducah Tilghman.

Friday against Cape Central, leading hitters were Parker Gibbs who went 3-for-4 with a double, Chase Hayden 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs and Conner Mannon 2-for-5.

In games on Saturday against Central Magnet, Hayden and Griffin Darnall both were 2-for-4 at the plate. In their game versus Windsor, Evan Oakley was 1-for-4 with four RBIs and three more hits came from Mannon, Ethan Landis and Brady Ives.

Monday against Paducah Tilghman, the game was tied 1-1 after three innings before a two-run top of the sixth put the Tornados up 3-1 on singles by Zion LaGrone and Leyton Patterson.

The Marshals scored in the bottom of the seventh to cut Tilghman’s lead to one on a ground ball out hit by Gibbs that brought in Ty Davenport but they would come up short. It was the 11th straight win for the Tornados behind the pitching of Justin West who over six innings struck out 13 while allowing just one hit and no earned runs.

Davenport went 2-for-3 to notch the only two hits for the Marshals. With the loss they slipped to 4-4.

Marshall County senior Evan Oakley earned the win over the Lakers in five innings on the mound, allowing two hits, one run, struck out four and walked five.

A nice end to the four losses came on Tuesday in a 13-1 win over Calloway County. Brady Ives led at the plate going 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs and Parker Gibbs was 2-for-3 with three RBIs.  Evan Oakley earned the win over five innings, allowing two hits, one run and striking out four.

The Marshals wasted no time in their first time at the plate, running through the batting order and putting four runs on the board, all on two outs. Runs scored on a two RBI single by Ty Davenport and singles by Gibbs and Clay Hale.

Calloway notched their only run of the game in the top of the second and the Marshals added another run in the bottom of the inning when Ives crossed home plate on a wild pitch after leading the inning off with a double.

It was a 6-1 game at the end of the third, the Marshals scoring on a single by Ives before their big bottom of the fourth that brought in seven runs. Gibbs brought in the first two on a two run single to left field, a bases loaded walk by Ethan Landis brought the ninth run in, Gibbs scored on a wild pitch followed by Kalan Whiteside scoring on an ground out hit by Ives. The final two runs of the game crossing on a double by Oakley.

The Marshals will turn around in two days and play the second district game against the Lakers in Murray on Thursday.
