Marshall County girls picked up another all-important district win over Calloway County on Thursday, a night they celebrated their two seniors – Whitley Watwood and Maddie Darnall.

The Lady Lakers struck first on a goal by sophomore Addi Schumacher in the 32nd minute. Calloway County threatened to go up 2-0 when Rylee McCallon found the net in the 26th minute but  she was called off-sides.

Hope Howard had a nice look at the halfway point of the half that went just wide but two minutes later would find the net to tie 1-1. The Lady Marshals went up 2-1 with nine minutes left in the half on a goal by Janie Pagel and Howard with her second goal in stoppage time before the half for a 3-1 lead.

Elle Carson scored for the Lady Lakers just under the 28 minute mark of the second half to cut the lead to one but the Lady Marshals held the one goal lead to finish off the 3-2 win.

Assists on goals went to Kelsey Crass, Kinsley Perry and Kallen Fuller. Goalkeeper Parker Perry recorded six saves. In their seven games played, the Lady Marshals have scored 33 goals and allowed only four.

Head Coach Michael Boone was happy with the equalizer after being down 1-o, then proud of their effort to add two more goal after that to provide some cushion. Boone said they usually play with three backs and did most of the game but switched back to four to close out the game after the Lady Lakers second goal.

Boone plans to learn from this one when the two teams will most likely meet again in the semi-final round of the district tournament.

Boone coached against one of his former players and assistant coaches in Thursday’s game. Savannah Thielen took over the Calloway County girl’s program this season and Boone said, “I’m proud of her and she has already ingested her personality and will and grit into the team. They gravitate to her. She’s a leader and has been since she played JV in seventh grade.”

The Lady Marshals improve to 5-1-1 and will play Owensboro Catholic on Saturday at Colburn Stadium at 11:00 a.m.
