Marshall County Sheriff’s Report February 28, 2017

Marshall County has seen an increase in theft of property, and trailers the past few weeks. We would like to encourage all Marshall County citizens to lock up your personal belongings, including vehicles, ATV’s, buildings, and homes. We would also recommend locking up trailers using a hitch locking device, or other method, as these have become easy targets to thieves.

Another way to help protect your property is through the use of surveillance cameras. Surveillance video and photographs can make a huge difference in whether a case gets solved or not, and gives us options in investigating a theft. These surveillance systems can be as elaborate as a home surveillance system, or as simple, and inexpensive, as a well placed trail cam. If you live in close proximity to a neighbor, you may consider setting up your trail cams to help cover one another, as a modern day neighborhood watch.
Something else that can aid an investigation is pictures of your valuables. This gives us a better visual of what we are looking for, and we may be able to share the photo on our page. Also take note of serial numbers, VIN’s, or any other identifying numbers because this may allow us to enter your stolen property into a national database. Many trailers do not have identifying numbers, so create your own and put it in several spots on the trailer that are visible and are not visible, and keep track of what the number is and where you placed it on the trailer. Keep all this information written down and locked up somewhere where you can get easy access to it in case of a theft. This information is also handy to have when filing an insurance claim, and your adjuster will thank you.
Furthermore, if you see something suspicious, call us. Please do not wait to call because it may take time for a deputy to get to the area in question. We would rather our community be safe than sorry. Here are some important details to try and get for dispatch if possible:
– a registration (license plate) number.
– a vehicle make, model, body style, color, etc.
– distinguishing features of the vehicle or people (bumper stickers, scars, tattoo’s)
– a direction of travel
– how many people, race, sex, approx. age, height, weight, clothing description, etc
Together we can keep Marshall County safe, and get the criminals off the streets, and out of our neighborhoods. But it will require us all working together.
