Grimes Accepting Nominations for Secretary of State’s Civic Education Award

FRANKFORT, Ky. (Jan. 27, 2016) – Nominations are now being accepted for the 2016
Kentucky Outstanding Civic Education Leadership Award, Secretary of State Alison
Lundergan Grimes announced today. The award recognizes teachers, school
administrators, legislators and community leaders who have made significant
contributions toward promoting civic learning to teach students the importance of
being engaged citizens.

"Throughout my travels across Kentucky, I have met inspiring young people who are
responsible and engaged citizens," said Grimes. "I know that behind each of them is
a remarkable educator or mentor. This award is a way to recognize Kentuckians who
have dedicated their time, talents and energy to the success of Kentucky's young
people – our future leaders."

The award winner will receive a $1,000 cash prize to be used to further his or her
civic learning initiatives. One finalist will be selected from each Kentucky High
School Athletic Association region, and the winner and each finalist will receive a
plaque and be recognized during the KHSAA Boy’s Sweet 16 Basketball Tournament in
Lexington.

Michael Rodenberg, President of Murakami Manufacturing U.S. in Taylor County,
received the 2015 Outstanding Civic Education Leadership Award. Rodenberg
exemplifies good corporate citizenship, using his extensive business and
international experience to help students from elementary to high school succeed and
bridge gaps among cultures.

The Outstanding Civic Education Leadership Award is part of Grimes’ continued
efforts to improve civic engagement in Kentucky. During her first term, Grimes
conducted a statewide series of roundtables in communities to discuss ways to
improve Kentucky’s overall civic health. The result of the yearlong initiative was
the Kentucky Civic Health Assessment, a report Grimes released which summarizes the
topics and solutions discussed during the forums.

Application/Nomination forms and additional information about the award are
available at www.sos.ky.gov. The Office of the Secretary of State is proud to
sponsor this award with the Administrative Office of the Courts and the Kentucky
Department of Education.

The deadline for nominations and submissions is Feb. 26.
