Lady Marshals fall to CCA in regional tournament

Sarah Bremmerkamp (20) looks for the kill against Community Chrisitan blocker Dailyn Cauley (20) in Tuesday’s First Region Tournament game.

Community Christian ended the Lady Marshals volleyball season on Tuesday with a 3-0 (25-9, 25-21, 25-23) win in the opening round of the First Region Tournament held at Marshall County. CCA will move on to the semifinals to play Mayfield, a 3-0 winner over Carlisle County. McCracken County and Graves County will play in the other semifinal match on Wednesday.

Marshall County and CCA played each other in their season openers back on August 15, the Lady Marshals winning 3-0. On October 13, they met for the second time this season and that one went to the Lady Warriors 3-0.

It was a slow start for the Lady Marshals in the opening set, while the fired-up Lady Warriors jumped out to an 11-5 lead fueled by a kill and ace from Dailyn Cauley. Leading 15-9, CCA put together a 10-0 run behind a string of serves from Olivia Carroll to take the first set 25-9.

Trailing in set two, a kill by Charley Woods followed by a great serve from Leigha McVickers for the Lady Marshals tied the set at 9-9. McVickers followed that up with an ace to give the Lady Marshals their first lead. From there, it was a battle with four more ties before CCA took a 16-15 lead, one they held to finish out set two 25-21 to lead 2-0 in the match.

The Lady Marshals battled through the third set to keep the match alive. An ace by Annie Beard tied the game early at 2-2 and a kill from Sarah Bremmerkamp gave them a 4-3 lead. Two straight kills from Abby Belcher kept the Lady Marshals out in front 13-10, but a 3-0 run by CCA tied the game up at 13 and they took the lead on a kill by Cauley. Three ties followed before CCA took the lead for good at 18-17 and went on to win the set 25-23 and the match 3-0.

The Lady Marshals season ends with a record of 15-7. CCA improves to 27-11.
