Lady Eagles take down St. Mary, 71-40

Lillian Burnett dropped in this shot for two of her 23 points to lead the Lady Eagles in a 29-point victory over St. Mary.

Christian Fellowship’s Lady Eagles notched their second straight win over St. Mary in Thursday’s 70-41 win after defeating the Lady Vikings last season for the first time. They were led by sophomore Lillian Burnett with 23 points along with freshman Gracie Howard and sophomore Alyssa Warren – both also in double figures with 17 and 11 respectively.

As young as the CFS squad is, St. Mary is even younger under seventh year Head Coach Gwen Duncan with seven eighth graders on the roster.

Rhema Howard and Gracie Howard kicked off the scoring for an early 4-0 lead, one the Lady Eagles continued to build on, finishing out the first quarter on a nice put back by Burnett to lead 21-12.

Jayden Jackson opened the second quarter scoring for the Lady Eagles followed by a bucket from Gracie Howard to go up by 13 points. After a basket by St. Mary’s Anistyn Thomas, Warren hit two straight for a 29-14 CFS lead and they closed out the first half up 39-22.

The Lady Eagles out-scored the Lady Vikings 20 to nine in the third quarter, led by Gracie Howard with six points to take a 59-31 lead into the fourth quarter. Their largest lead of 32 points came late in the game on their way to a 70-41 win, the final basket by freshman Elli LeClaire.

“It was a little sloppy but anytime you can win by 29 points…I’ll take it”, Head Coach Trevor Jackson said. Jackson said he wants his team to do a better job protecting the ball and would like to see more rebounding on both ends of the court.

Eight different players scored for CFS in the win, Rhema Howard pulled in 12 rebounds and Gracie Howard hit two for the Lady Eagles from beyond the arc.

CFS moves to 2-1 on the season and will travel to Carlisle County for a game Friday at 6:00 before opening play in the First Region All “A” Classic on Monday, Jan. 11 against Mayfield. The Lady Eagles were scheduled to play their first game in the All “A” against Fulton County on Saturday but COVID-19 protocols led to a cancellation of that game.
