Marshals earn first district win over Murray

Senior Drake May and Murray’s Josh Eaton (17) go after the ball following a corner kick from William Lynch. The Marshals shut out the Tigers to win their first district game and start the 2020 season 2-0.

In just their second game of the 2020 season, the Marshals have taken their first step to defend their Second District title in the 3-0 shutout over Murray.

With just one game against district opponents Murray, Graves County, Calloway County and Mayfield – each game brings added pressure in the hunt for the #1 seed in the post-season tournament.

The last time the two teams  played was in last season’s district title game that ended in a 0-0 tie, went into two five minute overtime periods and decided on penalty kicks. All three contests with Murray last season were decided by one goal.

The first goal in Tuesday’s home-opener came from junior Collin Shadowen in the 25th minute and the lead was 1-0 at halftime. Just under eight minutes into the second half, Collin Riley scored his third goal of the season to make it a 2-0 game.

William Lynch scored his third goal of 2020 on an assist from Tyler Treas in the closing minutes to seal the 3-0 win.

Thursday, the Marshal will travel to Hopkinsville to take on the Tigers in what will be their season-opener. In 2018, Hopkinsville advanced to the final four of the state tournament, losing 2-1 to Highlands and last season, the Tigers finished 16-8-1 after advancing to the Second Region Tournament semi-finals.

Collin Shadowen sent this shot into the net to put the Marshals on the board in the 25th minute of the first half in their 3-0 win over Murray.
