Lady Marshals, Marshals sweep district games over Graves County

Whitley Watwood scored the first goal in penalty kicks to help lead the Lady Marshals to a 3-2 win over Graves County.

It was a double-header district sweep for the Lady Marshals and Marshals at Graves County on Tuesday. The girl’s game wasn’t decided until two five-minute overtime periods and a round of penalty kicks gave the Lady Marshals a 3-2 win. The Marshals followed that up with a 4-0 shut out over the Eagles.

Carmen Gunn scored the first goal of the game on an assist from Emma Green for the Lady Marshals, tied up by Graves County on a goal by Ellie Carter for a 1-1 score at the end of the first 20 minute quarter, due to the heat index. Soon after the second half got underway, the Lady Eagles went up 2-1. Kallen Fuller found the net for the Lady Marshals to tie the game 2-2 and send it into overtime.

Still scoreless after two overtime periods, the game headed into five rounds of penalty kicks. Whitley Watwood started the first round with a goal, equaled by Nicole Bradley (1-1). Kelsey Crass found the net in round two, equaled by Ellie Carter (2-2). In round three, both Mia Teague and Raychel Mathis PK’s were saved by the keepers (2-2) and the same in round four on kicks by Hope Howard and Anna Whitaker (2-2). Carmen Gunn found the net in the fifth round to put the Lady Marshals up by one (3-2), leaving it up to Graves County’s Hannah Elliott. Elliott’s ball was saved by Carlen Whirley but it was called back and she would get another opportunity…again saved by Whirley for the win.

Kiefer Court (left) and Chase Riley each scored two goals in the Marshals 4-0 shut out over Graves County.

In the boy’s contest, the Eagles found the net early-on but were called off-sides. The Marshals got to work and scored two goals before the half, the first from Chase Riley with an assist to Collin Riley and the second goal by Keifer Court on an assist from Chase Riley for a 2-0 halftime lead.

Chase Riley and Court weren’t finished. Both scored again in the second half – Riley first on an assist from William Lynch and Court on an assist by Jack Noles for the 4-0 district win. Ben Burkeen earned the shut out with five saves.

They will have a chance to do it again on Thursday when the two teams meet at Colburn Stadium. The girl’s game gets underway at 5:30 followed by the boy’s at 7:30. It’s Alumni Night, Pink Out Night and Marshall County Soccer Association Night. All youth players who wear their jerseys get in free.
