Lady Marshals fall to Carterville 46-36 in Saturday’s Hoopfest

Marshall County and Carterville, IL girls kicked off Saturday’s Hoopfest slate of eight games. Carterville came into Saturday’s game with six wins already this season and led from start to finish but the Lady Marshals didn’t make it easy. Trailing 5-0 to start the game, the Lady Marshals tied it 5-5 and trailed 9-5 at the end of the first quarter.

Trailing 13-8 in the second quarter, Carterville dropped in two straight 3-pointers by Megan Barton and Abbey Crain to extend their lead out to 11 points, their largest in the game. Free throws from Emily Bridges, four points by Lorin Powell and a basket and free throw to end the half from Kinley Edwards brought the Lady Marshals to within seven points of the Lions at halftime, trailing 25-17.

Tera Colson opened the second half with two points, a three from Chloe Kerrick and baskets by Colson again, Whitnee Miller and Powell pulled the Lady Marshals to within two points at 30-28, but Carterville finished the quarter out on a 5-0 run to stretch their lead back out to seven.

Powell made it a five point game to open the fourth quarter and they would get no closer. As the clock ticked down, the Lady Marshals were forced to foul a team that shot over 81.3 percent from the line during the game, hitting six of eight attempts in the closing seconds of the game.

Carterville’s Megan Barton earned MVP honors with 15 points in the win. The Lady Marshals were led by Powell with 12 points and 14 rebounds.
