Marshall County cross country teams are state-bound

Marshall County’s boys cross country team qualified for a fifth straight trip to the KHSAA State Cross Country Meet, the girl’s team qualifying for the second consecutive year. A fourth place finish at Saturday’s Class 3A Regional meet for the boys and a fifth place for the girls earned the two teams a spot in the state meet that takes place on Saturday.

The 2020 state meet leaves its long-standing venue at Lexington’s Kentucky Horse Park and will be held at the Bourbon County Cross Country Course in Paris, Ky.

Daviess County took the team title on Saturday in both the boys and girls Class3A races. The top six state qualifiers among the boy’s teams behind Daviess County – 2nd Muhlenberg County, 3rd Madisonville-North Hopkins, 4th Marshall County,  5th Apollo, 6th Hopkinsville.

The girls teams heading to state behind first place Daviess County – 2nd McCracken County, 3rd Graves County, 4th Henderson County, 5th Marshall County, 6th Apollo.

McCracken County’s Maggie Aydt, who has committed to the University of Kentucky, finished first in the girl’s race with a time of 18:45.85. Daviess County finished in the next four spots and placed seven runners among the top 10 finishers.

The top two for the Marshall County girls making the top 20 was Audra Fite in 14th (21:44.61) and seventh grader Eden Sandlin finished 16th (21:53.58).

Jackson Watts, a senior from Madisonville-North Hopkins won the boy’s 5000 meter race in 15:14.96. Watts broke the Maroons school record on Saturday and has the fastest qualifying time in the state.

Cade Flatt crossed the finish in fourth for the Marshals top finish in 16:25.27. Ethan McCarty grabbed a top 10 with a 10th place finish in 17:10.66 and Samuel Lanham placed 22nd in 17:41.12.

The Marshals placed seventh in the 2019 state meet, the best finish for the program in over 20 years.

Class 1A and Class 2A regionals were held in Murray. In Class 1A, the boy’s team from Dawson Springs took first and University Height’s Thomas Duncan won the individual title (16:44.37). Ft. Campbell won the girl’s team title and the first place finisher was St. Mary’s Gabby Ault (21:22.65).

Webster County boys won the Class 2A team title and Trigg County’s Austin Cavanaugh took first (17:00.60). Calloway County girls won the team title, taking the top four places in the race with first going to Ainsley Smith (20:35.79)
