(PADUCAH, Ky.) — West Kentucky Community and Technical College celebrated the legacy of its local Board of Directors last week, presenting members with commemorative awards at what would be the board’s final meeting before being dissolved under a new state law.
The recognition follows the passage of Kentucky House Bill 619, which restructures governance across the Kentucky Community and Technical College System. The legislation expands the KCTCS Board of Regents from its current size to 17 members representing the state’s Supreme Court districts, eliminates the individual college boards of directors, and establishes regional advisory groups to maintain local business and community input. The bill also renames all 16 KCTCS college presidents to chancellors, effective July 1.
Board Chair Barry MacDonald acknowledged the bittersweet nature of the occasion.
“With the passage of HB 619 dissolving the WKCTC Board of Directors, I would first like to thank all those who have served on this board through the years,” MacDonald said. “Many individuals have generously given their time, talents, and leadership in support of the college and its mission.”
MacDonald said he believes the board leaves behind a meaningful legacy, even as it transitions its responsibilities to a newly created advisory council.
“While we are saddened to see the Board of Directors dissolved, I firmly believe the board has played an important role in building relationships throughout the region and strengthening the college’s connection to the communities it serves,” he said. “I am hopeful the new council members will bring fresh perspectives and ideas that continue to benefit the college and support its future success.”
WKCTC President Dr. Anton Reece said he supports the changes brought by HB 619 while honoring the outgoing board’s contributions.
“I am deeply appreciative of the longstanding support and service of our Board of Directors,” Reece said. “Their leadership and advocacy have made a lasting impact on this institution and the students we serve. I look forward to working with the future advisory group as we continue important work at WKCTC.”
During their tenure, board members supported college initiatives, helped forge community partnerships, and advocated for expanded higher education access across western Kentucky.
