Marshall County crossed Hwy. 68 to play district neighbor Christian Fellowship on Tuesday. The Marshals were looking to remain unbeaten while the Eagles were hoping to pick up their fifth win of the season as well as a district win.
Despite a valiant first quarter effort by CFS, the Marshals started to pull away in the second quarter and finish out the 89-56 win and improve to 15-0. The loss drops the Eagles to 5-9.
Marshall County led 9-2 in the first quarter but consecutive three-pointer from Elijah Grigg quickly trimmed the Marshals lead to one. A couple of threes from Jakin Burnett pulled CFS to within one point and they kept it close, trailing by three at 25-22 to end the quarter.
Elijah Grigg, who was just 24 points away from his 2,000th career point, hit his third and fourth three-pointers in the second quarter to keep the Eagles close. The junior was fouled on his second three and proceeded to drain the free throw to keep the Eagles within three points at 33-29.
Four straight points from Tommy Robertson was the start of a 14-0 run for the Marshals that pushed their lead to 47-29 and they went up 54-31 at the halftime break.
Marshall County scored the first 15 points of the second half to extend their lead to 69-31 before the run ended on a basket by Samuel Grigg. They outscored the Eagles 21-6 in the third quarter to push the lead to 38 points.
A three from Burnett opened the fourth for CFS, answered with a three at the other end by Maxson Mitchell to put the Marshals up 80-42. CFS went on to outscore the Marshals by five in the quarter which gave Elijah Grigg an opportunity to reach the 2,000 point mark. The game was paused to recognize his achievement.
Matthew Langhi led the Marshals with 25 points over the first three quarters. Elijah Grigg led CFS with 25 points and hit six of the Eagles nine three-pointers.
The Marshals are scheduled to travel to Lincoln County to play Wayne County in the Patriot Classic on Saturday weather permitting. Christian Fellowship will travel to Fulton City on Friday.
