First Snowfall and Wintry Mix Forecast for Much of the Bluegrass

Travel impacts possible in Eastern Kentucky, parts of Northern and Central Kentucky

FRANKFORT, Ky.
(Nov. 21, 2024) – With the first wintry weather of the season expected this afternoon through Friday morning, Kentuckians are reminded to practice safe driving habits and keep an eye out for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) snow-fighting crews.

The National Weather Service (NWS) is tracking a winter storm system expected to affect travel in Eastern Kentucky with snow accumulations between 2 and 4 inches in higher elevations, and has advised that Kentuckians should plan for possible slippery roads. Forecasts for the northern and central regions of the state call for rain and snow with possible accumulation and wind gusts exceeding 30 mph that could create hazardous driving conditions.

“Our top priority is making sure our families are safe on the roads during their commutes to work and school,” said Gov. Andy Beshear. “Our highway crews have an eye fixed on the forecasts, monitoring for any possible effects on travel in order to keep Kentuckians safe. We’re also encouraging folks to stay weather-aware, and if there is inclement weather – slow down and increase the following distance from the car ahead of you.”

KYTC highway technicians will monitor weather conditions and have salt and plow trucks ready to patrol or spot treat roadways as needed, especially on bridges and overpasses where isolated slick spots could occur.

“Despite warmer temperatures in Central Kentucky, there is a likelihood that snow can accumulate during brief periods of heavy precipitation and could create slick road conditions,” said KYTC Secretary Jim Gray. “While our crews are standing by to help keep traffic moving safely, we want everyone on the road to stay safe by slowing down, eliminating distractions and buckling up. And if you see our crews at work, please give them room.”

Driver Tips

Motorists are encouraged to prepare and to stay safe by following these tips:

  • Alter travel plans to avoid driving during the peak of weather activity.
  • Drive with a full tank of gas and pack an emergency car kit that contains essential items like blankets, ice scrapers, jumper cables, a flashlight, a cellphone charger, nonperishable snacks and a first-aid kit should you get stranded on the road.
  • Winterize your vehicle. Check your car battery, tire pressure and tread, and brakes. Ensure your heater, defroster, headlights and windshield wipers are working properly.
  • When snow and/or ice are on roadways, drive slowly no matter what type of vehicle you drive. It takes more time and distance to stop your vehicle in poor weather, so brake early and slowly.
  • Pay attention to weather advisories and allow more time to travel for routine commutes. Expect delays.
  • Slow down when approaching intersections, off-ramps, bridges or shaded areas. These are all candidates for developing “black ice” – a thin coating of clear ice that can form on the paved surface that may be difficult to see.
  • Maintain a safe distance from snowplows and other heavy highway equipment, and do not pass snowplows on the shoulder.
  • Eliminate distractions while driving, such as using a phone and or eating.
