Marshals hold off Paducah Tilghman 59-58

Matthew Langhi lays in two of his team leading 25 points over Paducah Tilghman defender Ahmad Wilkins in the Marshals one-point win over Paducah Tilghman.

Marshall County’s last win over Paducah Tilghman came on March 7, 2020 in the Region 1 Tournament. Since that time, the Marshals have lost five straight until Friday night in Paducah when they pulled off a 59-58 win over the Blue Tornado.

Freshman Matthew Langhi’s 25 points led the Marshals in the win. Sophomore Miles Woodfork led Paducah Tilghman with 17 points.

An early 6-4 lead quickly stretched to 11-4 on five straight points from Langhi. The Marshals ended the first quarter with a five-point lead at 15-10.

Langhi scored to open the second quarter, but it was followed by a couple of technicals on the Marshals after a basket by Orrin Phelps. Phelps and Alex Staples received the technical fouls which sent Ahmad Wilkins to the line, and he converted on three of the four foul shots.

Paducah Tilghman tied the game up at 24-24 with two minutes left in the quarter following a 9-0 run. Staples hit a three pointer then scored again on an assist from Tommy Robertson and the lead was 29-26 at halftime.

After driving toward the goal, Alex Staples (11) sends the ball back out to Matthew Langhi who sank the three-pointer.

Marshall County led by as many as eight in the third quarter before the Blue Tornado closed the gap once again to tie the game up at 36 and take their first lead at 38-37. Paducah Tilghman held a 41-39 lead to end the quarter. The Marshals made 16 trips to the free throw line in the quarter and uncharacteristically missed half of those attempts.

Langhi tied the game at 41 to kick off his 10-point fourth quarter which led to a 55-49 lead for the Marshals. Paducah Tilghman kept charging, getting a three-point play from Joshua Campbell to cut it to three points.

Logan Parker hit two free throws for a five-point lead that was cut to two on a three pointer from Wilkins. Parker scored again to put the Marshals back up by four at 59-55 but the Blue Tornado came at them with another three to trim the lead back to one point.

Leading 59-58, the Marshals survived the final shot attempts by the Blue Tornado, coming up with a loose ball as time ran out.

The Marshals extend their current win-streak to six and improve to 15-4. Up next, they head to Union County for a game on Tuesday.
