Master Gardener Barbara Ray joined us on WCBL’s Coffee Call program. Ray says fall is one of her favorite times of year. And she says there is an art to picking a pumpkin. Ray says the first thing to do is to pick color. It needs to be a bright, deep orange, all the the way around the pumpkin. Next, check for bad spots or bruising. And make sure the stem is firmly attached to the pumpkin. And if you want a jack-o-lantern pumpkin for carving, you want it to sound hollow when you thump it. Ray says lots of free information about gardening is available from the Marshall County Extension Office.
