Marshals late come back falls short against Mayfield

Logan Davis, pictured last week in the Marshals game against Murray, led with 17 points in Saturday’s loss to Mayfield.

Coming into Saturday’s game the Marshals and Mayfield had one thing in common, a single loss to McCracken County. The Marshals just the night before by four points and Mayfield on Dec. 13 by 18 points but Saturday belonged to the Cardinals who beat the Marshals 70-58, handing them their second loss of the season.

Down by seven at 20-13 after the first quarter, the Marshals fell victim to Mayfield’s hot shooting from behind the arc in the first half which led to a 14-point lead for the Cardinals at halftime. Logan Davis had nine points and Alex Staples eight to lead the Marshals first half scoring.

Mayfield took their largest lead of the game of 20 points in the third quarter and held it heading into the fourth quarter up 53-33.

Chase Binkley hit a 3-pointer to open the fourth quarter for the Marshals and fueled by six straight points from Staples and a basket from Wade Moore, they cut the Mayfield lead down to 13 points with 4:30 remaining in the game.

The Marshals managed to cut the Mayfield 20-point lead in half with 1:15 left on the clock but the deficit was too much to overcome in the final quarter.

They will look to get back in the win column with three games coming up on Dec. 22-23. They will host Deltona, Fla. at 10:00 a.m. and Harrison County at 7:00 this Thursday and Camden Central, Tenn. in a 1:30 game on Friday.
