One of the most popular guests on Coffee Call, Master Gardener Barbara Ray joined us recently on WCBL. Ray says to be on the lookout for deer, because they can destroy a garden in no time. Ray says she is going to try something new this year, a motion detecting sprinkler system that will hopefully chase off deer when they get close to the plants. Japanese beetles are also a problem. Ray says an alternative to spraying is to go out early in the morning and you can pick the beetles off your roses or other plants and that will prevent them from laying their eggs and will break their life cycle. She says the June motto for gardening is “weed, weed & weed, feed and pests.” Ray also says the end of June is a good time to get a good deal on plants at your local nurseries.
