Christian Fellowship sophomore Andrew Dunning led with 20 points and 13 rebounds – his second double-double this season – in the Eagles 80-57 win over Community Christian Academy in Saturday’s home game. Three teammates joined Dunning in double-figures – Andrew Allen with 19 points, Isaac Hovekamp had 17 and Luke Grigg with 15.
Hovekamp opened the CFS scoring with a 3-pointer for a 3-2 lead but they would trail until he hit his second from behind the arc to put the Eagles up 11-9. Another CCA lead at 12-11 would be their last after two straight baskets from Grigg put CFS up 15-12 and they would hold the lead the rest of the way, leading 18-12 going into the second quarter.
Allen and Grigg combined for the next eight CFS points to lead 26-19, CCA cutting the lead down to three at 28-25 on two 3-pointers by Eli Paxton and Prince Kahnplaye. A three point play by Dunning was equaled by another three from Kahnplaye and the lead was still three. Allen dropped a 3-pointer and Dunning hit two at the free throw line to extend the lead to eight points at 36-28 at halftime.
Hovekamp and Allen put CFS up 41-28 early in the third quarter and the Eagles went on to out-score CCA 27-11 for a 63-39 lead, highlighted by a streak of 10 straight points in the quarter by Dunning.
The 24-point lead held throughout the fourth quarter, dropping just one point to CCA on their way to a 23-point win, a third straight in the win column to improve to 8-3 – the Eagles best start in over two decades.
