Log dislodges from place near creek, injures child

An 11-year-old boy was injured Friday after police say he was in the path of a large log as it fell.

Emergency responders and South Marshall Fire Department crews were dispatched Friday evening to a residence at Karen Faye Lane in Hardin in response to a report of a child trapped beneath a log.

Marshall County Sheriff Kevin Byars said a group of children, accompanied by an adult, had been playing in a nearby creek, when a previously felled tree or log dislodged from its place on a hill above the area and rolled onto the child.

Residents were able to free the child from beneath the log prior to responders’ arrival, according to reports.

Byars said the child suffered significant injury in the incident. He was taken to Marshall County Hospital and then flown to Vanderbilt University Children’s Hospital in Nashville, Tenn., for treatment.

His condition was unknown as of 11 a.m. Tuesday.
