The Marshals placed second in a field of 12 teams Saturday in the Ballard Memorial Invitational at the Ballard County Golf Course, five strokes behind first place McCracken County. A tournament filled with Region 1 teams, McCracken County’s Dalton Bagwell shot a 1-under par 71 to earn individual medalist honors.

Camdyn McLeod led the Marshals with a 2-over 74, finishing his round tied for fifth individually with Husten Lancaster of Mayfield. Fifth place was determined by a playoff that began on the first hole where both players parred. On the second hole of the playoff, McLeod and Lancaster each bogeyed so on to hole number three the twosome went.

According to Coach Keith Bell, both players had good drives on the third playoff hole saying, “Lancaster’s second shot went by the pin to the fringe of the green and McLeod had an uphill chip for his third shot which ended up five feet from the pin. Unfortunately, McLeod missed the putt for a bogey and Lancaster two putted for a par.”

Coach Bell felt that McLeod gained a lot from the experience of the playoff that will help him down the road with his teammates cheering him on every shot.

“I was really proud of how Camdyn and Nathan played today, they both continue to improve each week”, Bell said. “When one teammate isn’t having their best day, another teammate steps up and contributes in a large way. Jay had a good round with the exception of one hole #10 and Tyler had a couple of bad breaks and wasn’t playing the golf that he has been in the past few weeks. Grant Hackney wasn’t feeling 100% today but he grinded through the round with a 6- over par, 78.”

Bell said he challenged the team on Friday to come out and prove to themselves what this team was capable of and thought the team responded and did just that on Saturday.

“Even though golf is an individual sport, these players pull for each other when things aren’t going well.” Bell added.

Behind McLeod’s 74, Jay Nimmo shot a 3-over 75, Grant Hackney 78, Nathan Clark 80 and Tyler Powell 83.

The Marshall County “B”  team shot 373 to finish 11th with scoring coming from Drake Butler 84, Nick Dowdy 87, Teddy Wynn 100 and Ben Staples 102.

The Marshals have two matches this coming week, Tuesday at Mayfield Country Club vs Mayfield and Thursday at Calvert City Country Club against Calloway County and Ballard Memorial.
