Marshals win first home game over Carlisle 80-58

DRAFFENVILLE – A year ago, Carlisle County handed the Marshals a 58-57 loss in the fourth game of the season, but the Marshals turned that around Tuesday, never trailing to the Comets from the opening tip to win 80-58, extending their early season record to 4-0.

D.J. Pigg opened the game with a 3-pointer, his first of five. Carlisle had a chance to tie the game when trailing 5-2, a basket and foul on Jordan Kellett was followed by a missed free throw before a Marshall 15-7 run led to a 20-11 first quarter lead.

Joseph Smith opened the second quarter with a dunk for Carlisle before the Marshals stretched their lead out to 10 for the second time in the game. The Comets drew the Marshals back in to within four points at 25-21. but baskets by Dawson Jolley and Skyler Smith stretched the lead back out to eight points while Cameron Thurman scored the final five points of the half for the Marshals to lead 35-27.

Jolley scored two straight goals to open the second half, giving the Marshals their largest lead of the game to his point at 39-27 and the rest of the quarter, Carlisle managed to stay within 10 points or less until a scoring frenzy from Dylan Walters to close out the third quarter put the Marshals up 52-38.

Pigg hit his fourth and fifth 3-pointers of the game early in the fourth quarter that gave the Marshals a 21 point lead as they out-scored Carlisle 28-20 in the final quarter closing the game out on two straight baskets by Matthew French.

Carlisle’s Noah Norsworthy led all scorers with 22 points with 12 added by Paxton Crider. Four Marshals were in double figures including Jolley with 17, Walters 16, Pigg 15 and Reed 12. Smith pulled in 13 rebounds in the win.

The Marshals will play the second game in a double-header with the Lady Marshals against Fulton County on Thursday in games to be played at Benton Middle School.
