Holiday Travel/End of Year Fatality Count Availability

As many of your know, AAA anticipates this Thanksgiving season will likely have the second highest number of holiday travelers since they started monitoring the numbers.

You can find their info here:  https://newsroom.aaa.com/2019/11/aaa-more-than-55-million-travelers-taking-to-the-roads-and-skies-this-thanksgiving/

By far, the heaviest traffic is expected on Wednesday, Nov 27.

As our KY Office of Highway Safety reported last week, there were 1,971 crashes during the Thanksgiving holiday last year in Kentucky, resulting in 420 injuries and seven deaths. Of those deaths, three were not wearing a seat belt and one involved distraction.

As of today, we have had 667 fatalities on Kentucky highways—11 above the same time last year.  If you add the average number of daily fatalities for the year to December, we can expect about 60 people who are alive today will not be here to ring in the new year with their families.

Current numbers show about 52% of those killed in crashes are not wearing their safety belt.

As an agency, The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) continues to encourage everyone to buckle up and drive defensively with a goal of zero fatalities.  So much so, that the first email I get each day is the updated fatality count.
