Lady Marshals volleyball open season with 2-1 win over CCA

Sophomore Alyssa McClain (18) gets a hit past CCA’s Anna Black (21) in the third set of the Lady Marshals 2-1 win over Community Christian Academy to open the 2019 season.

Opening the season with a win is always a great way to start…so is notching that first win for first year Lady Marshals Head Coach Laura Kinder. Marshall County’s Lady Marshals volleyball team opened at home Tuesday with a 2-1 (19-25, 25-23, 25-17) win over Community Christian Academy.

“We started out great, then we got down on ourselves when they started coming back”, Kinder said. “They finally started playing up to their potential there in set three which was nice to see. There’s obviously still some things we need to work on, but first game, I like what I saw and we’re happy to get a win.”

In set one against CCA, the Lady Marshals jumped out to a 12-5 lead with a couple of nice kills from Halle Langhi. They would see that lead fade away as the Lady Warriors out-scored Marshall County 6-0 to pull to within one point and take the lead at 14-13. CCA held the lead to finish out the first set with a 25-19 win.

Set two was close early before the Lady Marshals stretched their lead out to 13-6. CCA battled back to tie at 19-19 with two more ties at 22 and 23 points before a kill by Alyssa McClain put the Lady Marshals up 24-23 and the 25-23 set two win came on a ball dropping out of bounds by CCA.

In set three, the Lady Marshals jumped out to a 4-0 lead, and led 5-1 on a kill from Jessica Hicks. An ace from CCA pulled the Lady Warriors to within one point at 5-3, but from there the Lady Marshals stretched their lead out to ten points at 14-4. CCA continued to battle and pulled to within five points at 17-12. McClain found a hole to drop the ball in to give the Lady Marshals an 18-12 lead and they finished out the match with nice serves from Clara Bradley in their 25-17 third set win.

Langhi and Hicks led at the net with six kills a piece. Peyton Gresham had five service aces and Bradley recorded two.

Kinder liked what she saw in the earlier freshman and JV games, both squads getting a 2-1 win over CCA to open the season.

The Lady Marshals will play at Livingston Central on Thursday, the freshman game gets underway at 5:30 followed by JV and Varsity.
