Lyles Eye Center Team of the Week: Special Olympics Basketball

Marshall 1 (top photo) and Marshall 2 Special Olympics basketball teams will compete in the Region 1 Tournament this weekend in Bowling Green.

This week’s Lyles Eye Center Team of the Week is both Marshall County Special Olympics basketball teams – Marshall 1 and Marshall 2.

Marshall County Special Olympics Basketball recently hosted the 7th Annual Winter Jam tournament with 14 teams competing. The Marshall 1 split games 1-1 and have a current record of 6-8 going into the Region 1 Tournament. Marshall 2 went 2-0 improving to 12-2 for the season.

Both teams have been moved up to higher competitive brackets this year for the regional tournament. Marshall 1 will play in the B Orange Division and Marshall 2 will play in the 1A Red Division for the 1st time.

Both teams tipoff at 10:00 a.m. at the Bowling Green Parks and Recreation Department on Saturday Feb. 9. Marshall 1 will play the Christian County Tigers and Marshall 2 is in a round robin bracket playing two tough teams in the Ohio County Eagles and Murray Rockets Blue.

Marshall 1 has five Region I Silver Medals and Marshall 2 has won six Regional Championships in a row.

Marshall County Special Olympics basketball is in its eighth season with 30 athletes ranging in age from 9 to 61. Marshall 1 is coached by Matt Fountain and Marshals 2 by Jonny Byrd.
