A Paducah couple managed to escape injury after their truck caught fire Saturday on U.S. Highway 62 near Possum Trot.

Possum Trot-Sharpe Fire Department Assistant Chief Rickie Bearden said the department was dispatched about 7:41 p.m. Saturday to the parking lot of Little Cypress Baptist Church, at 10261 U.S. Hwy. 62, Calvert City, in reference to the fire. Bearden said the Paducah couple, who had no passengers at the time of the incident, had been hauling a boat from Kentucky Lake, when the driver noticed what appeared to be flames.

“According to his statement, he had just seen a little bit of fire come out from underneath the hood on the passenger side there and pulled in,” Bearden said. “It just went up in flames.”

Bearden said the truck, a white 2011 Chevrolet Silverado, was fully engulfed by the time firefighters arrived.

“It was so far gone by the time we got there, it was unreal,” Bearden said. “I think it just went up in flames immediately.”

Firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze using foam before the boat the couple had been pulling suffered any damage. PTSFD volunteers did not have to block traffic during the incident, and while Bearden said the fire had been extinguished relatively quickly, firefighters remained on scene about two hours until a wrecker service could retrieve the vehicle and the scene could be fully cleared.

The cause of the fire, he said, was unknown.
