Marshall County tennis players advance to Region 1 quarter-finals

Elizabeth Padgett and Hayden Jaco advanced in singles play to Monday’s Region 1 quarter-finals.

PADUCAH – Marshall County’s tennis team wrapped up their spring 2017 season with a good showing at the Region 1 Tournament at the Larry J. Heflin tennis complex in Lone Oak. Following Saturday’s opening rounds, the Marshall County squad qualified two individuals and one doubles team to Monday’s quarter-finals.

Elizabeth Padgett was defeated by McCracken County’s Sophia Shiben 6-2, 6-4 on Monday after advancing to the quarterfinals with a win on Saturday over Hannah Abernathy of Ballard Memorial 6-1, 6-2.

Hayden Jaco’s Region 1 Tournament run also ended on Monday when he was defeated by Tilghman’s Parker Rowton 6-2, 6-2. Jaco advanced to the quarter-finals after defeating Graves County’s Matthew Whitaker 6-0, 6-0.

The doubles team of Alex Chapman and Kaleb Willie lost their quarter-final match to Cage Newman and Jordan Windhorst of McCracken County 6-4, 7-6 (4). Chapman and Willie advanced with a win on Saturday over Christian Fellowship’s Gavin Cypret and Brian Sibley 6-0, 6-0.

Opening round results Saturday in singles also included Charlie Reid falling to Calloway’s Marshall Thompson 6-4, 1-6 (10-6) and Courtney Phillips falling to Laken Shultz of Graves County 6-3, 6-2.

In doubles play, Thad Buchanan and Trevor Fisk were defeated by Graves County’s Hale and Carrico 6-1, 6-1, Pamela Ross and Kat Howard lost to Calloway’s Wagner and Wagner 6-1, 6-0 and Abbey Harrington and Kelsey Myers lost to Wright and Henderson of Mayfield.

We will be back better and stronger next year. The kids are already planning practices and setting goals for this summer and next year’s season.
