BENTON – It was Senior Night Monday as the Lady Marshals honored their two seniors, Lexee Miller and Payton Smothers, before taking on #6 ranked Madisonville North Hopkins. Miller and Smothers have played softball together since they were little and are both set to continue their softball careers after graduation. Miller is headed to Bethel University and Smothers to Belmont University.

Aubree Jo Kemp pitched seven inning against Madisonville Monday in the Lady Marshals 5-4 loss.

“Lexee and Payton are tremendous role models for our younger kids, they’re great leaders”, Head Coach Trent Lovett said. “They’re not the most vocal leaders, but they lead by example which is great. I’m very proud of them and we’re going to miss them so much, but we’ve got some more games with them and I hope we can go for a while.”

Two of the Lady Marshals last three games have been against #2 and #6 opponents and they have proven that they can play with most any team and Monday’s game against Madisonville was proof as the Lady Marshals took the Lady Maroons to the final inning before the game was decided, giving them their closest test in a win of the season.

The Lady Marshals took an early 3-0 lead in the first inning, scoring on a single by Seranna Tomassi after loading the bases on singles by Smothers and Miller and a walk by Addie Young. Miller scored on a ground out by Gracey Murt and Young scored on an error.

Madisonville cut the Lady Marshals lead to one in the top of the second inning, scoring on a single by Jayda Perkins and sacrifice fly from Kaylee Tow, then went on to tie the game 3-3 in the third on a home run by Mallory Peyton.

Madisonville took the lead in the fifth inning that the Lady Marshals tied 4-4 in the sixth inning scoring a run on a single by Aubree Jo Kemp but Madisonville scored the go ahead run for the win in the top of the seventh on a two-out single by Peyton.

Coach Lovett was very proud of how his young team hung in there saying, “We’re very young, we started four eighth graders tonight against the number six team in the state that are senior dominate.  I’m so proud of where they’ve come since the beginning of the season and what the future holds for them.”

The Lady Marshals will head to Bowling Green this weekend to play three games in the Best of the West against Bullitt East, Lyon County and Apollo.
