Playing in the prestigious Kentucky Invitational Tournament (KIT) on Saturday held at PGA Professional Justin Thomas’ home course Harmony Landing Country Club, the Marshals finished fifth with a team score of 302 (+18) against the strongest field they have faced so far this season that featured all the top teams and players in the state.
Taylor County won the event with 296 followed by a tie for second between St. Xavier (Green) and Madison Central at 297. Trinity placed fourth with a team score of 298.
The Marshals were led in scoring by Jay Nimmo who finished at 1-under par 70 to tie for third with Riley Bender of St. Xavier. Hayes Mason of Taylor County took the win, firing a 4-under par 67. Matthew Troutman of Christian Academy of Louisville placed second with a 3-under 68.
Behind Nimmo, three Marshals shot in the 70’s including Camdyn McLeod with 75, Trey Wall shot a round of 78, Preston Futrell finished with 79. Hayden Powell’s 89 rounded out the team scoring.
“This was a great event for the players to be a part of, it had the feel of the state tournament”, Coach Keith Bell said. “Our players embraced the challenge competing at a very high level. It was a great experience for this group of players to be a part of. It will pay dividends when the post season play begins.”
Coach Bell’s comments on his players KIT rounds:
“Jay played solid golf with four birdies, two bogeys and the remaining holes at par. He thought he left a couple of birdies on the course as he adjusted to green speeds.”
“Camdyn had solid round of golf that included no birdies, four bogeys and the remaining holes at par. He told me he felt like he was grinding through this round of golf and kept reminding him that pars are good.”
“Trey was one over par half way through his round. The back nine played tough for Trey with a highlight of a birdie on hole #17. He continued to play hard even after a couple of bogeys on the back nine.”
“Preston enjoyed a solid round of golf breaking the 80 barrier for the first time this season. He got off to a good start where he was just 2-over par after nine holes. I hope this round of golf gives Preston the confidence boost he needed.”
“Hayden played hard the whole day and never got mentally sideways on a day when several bogeys found his scorecard. He is a player that will not give up when things are going less than desirable.”
The Marshals will head to Franklin, Ky. next Saturday to play in the Franklin-Simpson Wildcat Shootout at Franklin Country Club.
