Powell leads with 19 in Marshals 63-55 win over Ohio County

Tyler Powell led the Marshals with 19 points in their win over Ohio County, earning the sophomore guard Most Valuable Player of the game.

The Marshals tipped off against Ohio County Wednesday in their second holiday tournament of the Christmas break at Ohio County in the PBI Bank Danny Annis Classic. The Marshals held on to win 63-55 after the Eagles wiped out a late first half 14 point deficit to tie the game up late in the third quarter.

Ohio County led 4-0 to start the game before the Marshals 7-0 run, fueled by free throws from Tyler Powell, a basket by Aaron Reed and three point play by Matt French. Ohio County tied the game at seven but that was followed by a 9-0 run by the Marshals to finish the first quarter up 16-7.

Logan Sandefur scored half of Ohio County’s first half points, seven coming in the second quarter, starting with a free throw and three point play to pull the Eagles to within seven, but two straight 3-pointers by Skyler Smith and Bryce Flatt extended the Marshals lead back out to 13. Sandefur and Powell exchanged three’s followed by a basket by Smith which gave the Marshals their largest lead of the game at 14 points. A three by Dylan Decker and final basket of the half by Shane Frady pulled the Eagles to within nine at halftime.

Powell scored the first four points for the Marshals to start the second half followed by an 8-0 run from Ohio County to pull to within three points at 33-30. The run was stopped on a basket by Reed but followed up by a three by Decker to pull the Eagles back to within. Decker’s fourth of seven three’s and a free throw by John Parker tied the game at 39 late in the quarter. Baskets by French and Reed gave the Marshals a four point lead heading into the fourth quarter.

That lead stretched out to 11 points after a three by Reed that put them up 55-44 before Decker’s sixth three of the game cut it to eight again with a little over a minute remaining. Decker’s final three cut the lead to four points but with time running out, free throws by Smith, Flatt and Nichols gave the Marshals the eight-point win.
