Lady Marshals defeat defending Region 3 champion Owensboro Catholic

DRAFFENVILLE – Lorin Powell scored a career high 31 points Saturday in the Lady Marshals 77-58 win over Owensboro Catholic, last season’s Region 3 Champion. The sophomore was 14 of 19 from the floor, 3 for 3 from the free throw line, had 5 rebounds and 2 assists.

“She’s put in the time, she’s worked extremely hard”, Head Coach Joseph Simmons said of Powell. “She had a huge summer for us and we were expecting big things from her going into the season. She’s learning how to battle, she’s learning how to bang against kids that are bigger than her. She’s worked on shots that matter, shots she’s going to get in a game.”

Four Lady Marshals scored in double figures in the win with 20 assists spread around by six players, led by Tera Colson with eight. Coach Simmons told his team in the locker room following the game he was proud of how unselfish they were in the game. Saying it’s one of the more unselfish teams he’s had since he’s been at Marshall County.

The Lady Marshals led 7-2 early with Owensboro Catholic closing in on the lead throughout the first quarter to trail by one at 20-19 behind two 3-pointers from Katelin Maggard and one by Ellie Mitchell who led the Lady Aces in the game with 21 points.

The Lady Aces opened up a seven point lead in the second quarter at 29-22 but finished out the first half on a 16-1 run behind eight points from Powell to end the half on a three by Miyah Davis to lead 38-30.

Powell scored the first four points for the Lady Marshals to open the third quarter on a 42-32 lead. Six points by Hannah Langhi, five from Davis and four from Henson combined for a 17 point lead at the end of the third quarter.

Twelve of Powell’s 31 points came in the fourth quarter, helping the Lady Marshals to hold off Owensboro Catholic and finish with a 19 point victory.
