Fiscal Court approves Sheriff and County Clerk budgets for 2017

BENTON – [VIDEO FOLLOWS REPORT] Marshall County Fiscal Court held their first meeting of 2017 on Tuesday, January 3rd.

In Correspondence, the Benton Women’s Club will hold the annual Puttin on the Mitz New Orleans Style to raise funds for the Marshall County Exceptional Center. The event is February 4, 2017 at 5:30 at Kentucky Dam Village. For more information call 504-228-6125.

On or about January 3, 2017, Mediacom will implement the following rate adjustments. The Local Broadcast Station Surcharge will go up $1.41 to $8.63, Regional Sports Surcharge new rate is $2.99, up 28 cents and Family TV will go up $2.00 to $71.95.

OLD BUSINESS
Hill Creek Subdivision
The public hearing was held at the last Fiscal Court meeting. All petition requirements have been met according to the road committee report.The court approved bringing the subdivision roads into the county road system.

NEW BUSINESS
South Marshall Fire Department
June Hudson resigned her position on the board due to a move out of state. A recommendation was made to fill the vacant position with Martha Hopper which the court approved. She will complete Hudson’s term which expires June 30, 2019.

Sheriff Department Budget
The budget for the cumulative quarterly report and annual settlement for calendar year 2017 was reviewed. Judge Kevin Neal discussed several areas in the budget and talked of areas that are hard to pin down definite figures such as court cost where they sometimes ecru overtime hours and DUI enforcement.

Alcohol related cases pending in court are up approximately 40% this year according to County Attorney Jeff Edwards.

Commissioner Bob Gold supported allowing the overtime hours in the Sheriff’s budget to be raised to 4,000 which will put the department’s budget for 2017 at $1,382,441.62. The court approved this action. County Treasurer Emily Martin recommended rounding to $1,382,500.

Country Clerk Budget
The budget changed slightly due to property tax assessments and increase in office supplies. The court approved the cumulative quarterly report and annual settlement for calendar year 2017. The court also approved the County Clerk Annual Order setting maximum amount for deputies and assistants.

The next meeting of the Fiscal Court will be Tuesday, January 17, 2017.
