The Marshall County tennis team is deep into their season with the Region 1 Tournament just around the corner, getting underway on May 10 at the Larry J. Heflin Tennis Center in Lone Oak.
The girls’ team has won matches over Ballard Memorial 6-0 and the West Ky. Lions 5-3. The boys’ team has picked up match wins over Ballard Memorial 7-2, Calloway County 5-4 and West Ky. Lions 6-2.
March 11 was the first match for the boys against Calloway County. Singles match wins were recorded by Elston Evans (8-1), Hunter Odom (8-0), Maverick Simmons (8-1) and Eli Rudd (8-6). Odom and Simmons won their doubles match 8-0.
On March 19 against Ballard Memorial, four girls won in singles including JC Well (8-0), Taylor Thomas (8-3), Emma Kate Whirley (8-3) and Theresa Kother (8-1). In doubles, Wells and Thomas won 8-0 and Whirley and Kother won 8-3.
The boys won seven matches over Ballard Memorial. Singles wins were earned by Elston Evans (9-7), Hunter Odom (3-0 forfeit), Maverick Simmons (8-0) and Eli Rudd (9-8/7-4 tiebreaker). Doubles matches were won by Evans and Rudd (8-5) and Odom and Simmons (8-5).
Against St. Mary on March 26, three match wins came from JC Wells (8-6), Maverick Simmons (8-2) and the doubles match of Wells and Delaney Miller (8-3).
The teams played the West Ky. Lions homeschool team on March 28. Five match wins for the girls came from JC Wells (8-0), Delaney Miller (9-7) and Theresa Kother (9-7) in singles play. Doubles matches were won by Wells and Miller (8-4) and Kother and Hill (8-4).
Four singles match wins over the West Ky. Lions for the boys’ team came from Maverick Simmons (9-7), Eli Rudd (8-2), Mason Hill (8-0) and Kiefer Siress (8-1). Winning doubles matches, Odom and Simmons (8-6) and Schroader and Lyles (8-0).
Against top Region 1 team Paducah Tilghman on April 15, the girls lost all their matches but picked up some game wins. Delaney Miller and Emma Kate Whirley each won three games in their matches. JC Wells and Chloe Anderson each picked up two games in their singles matches. In doubles, Wells and Miller lost 8-5 and Whirley and Thomas lost 8-6.
The boys won two matches against Paducah Tilghman. Mason Hill in singles (9-8/7-2 tiebreaker) and Hunter Odom and Maverick Simmons in doubles (8-5).
Against Region 1 powerhouse McCracken County on April 16, JC Wells won two games and Anderson Hill four games in their singles match losses. Two wins for the boys’ team came from Maverick Simmons (4-2/default) and Maddox Schroader and Mason Hill in doubles (8-6).
In a match against Calloway County on April 23, JC Wells won her singles match 8-0, her third 8-0 shutout of the season.
After a rain out on Monday against Mayfield, the team will hit the courts today for a match at St. Mary.
