(PADUCAH, Ky.) — West Kentucky Community and Technical College marked a milestone this week, celebrating more than 1,000 graduates during four commencement ceremonies held Dec. 15-16 at the Clemens Fine Arts Center.
The ceremonies represented the first regular in-person commencement at WKCTC in over two decades, aside from temporary adjustments during the COVID-19 pandemic. The college organized the celebrations into four separate ceremonies by academic program, allowing graduates and their families to participate comfortably with overflow seating and a live video feed available in the Student Center.
Guest Speakers Inspire Graduates
Three distinguished speakers addressed the graduates, offering messages of resilience, purpose and professional growth.
Chef Sara Bradley, a nationally recognized chef and James Beard Award semifinalist, encouraged graduates to pursue purpose and community leadership. “Don’t just chase hollow applause — chase depth and stories worth telling,” Bradley said. “Build spaces where other people can thrive, not just survive.”
Mike Muscarella, Executive Director of Ambulatory Services at Baptist Health Paducah and retired healthcare leader with a 34-year career, emphasized mentorship and integrity. “In small communities, your reputation walks ahead of you,” Muscarella told graduates. “And in healthcare, trust just isn’t earned in the clinic. It’s earned in every interaction, every moment, every choice.”
Roy Henley, a U.S. Army veteran, educator and WKCTC alumnus, shared a message of resilience. After military service and earning his degrees later in life, Henley now teaches history and social studies. “It doesn’t matter where you have come from. It doesn’t matter the curve balls that life throws your way. You have done it,” he said.
Student Speakers Share Personal Journeys
Three student speakers also addressed their fellow graduates, sharing stories of personal transformation and perseverance.
Michaelyn Sample, a Diagnostic Medical Sonography graduate who earned multiple academic and clinical awards, reflected on courage and growth. “With each finish line crossed comes a race that is over — and moving on from that familiar place brings fear and uncertainty,” Sample said. “Remembering what we’ve already overcome is what gives us the courage to face what comes next.”
Chloe Williams, a Cosmetology graduate who balanced motherhood with her studies and overcame growing up in foster care, emphasized resilience. “I was told that I would not amount to much and that all the odds were against me,” Williams shared. “Being a parent doesn’t erase your identity — it expands it.”
Gabriel “Gabe” Lawless, an associate in arts graduate who discovered a passion for psychology after overcoming early academic struggles, encouraged his peers to embrace discomfort. “Growth rarely looks like a straight line,” Lawless said. “Sometimes it looks like withdrawing from a chemistry class before creating a personal Chernobyl.”
