(PADUCAH, Ky.)-AAA responded to more than 27 million emergency roadside calls nationwide in 2024, with dead batteries and mechanical failures requiring towing dominating the service requests. These two issues alone represented nearly three-quarters of all calls, far surpassing traditional culprits like flat tires and lockouts.
“As the colder months approach, it’s time for motorists to think about scheduling routine vehicle maintenance,” said Matt Philips, operations manager of automotive services at AAA East Central. “October is Car Care Month and serves as an important reminder to schedule a thorough check of all vehicle components including tires, batteries, brakes, and fluids.”
The warning comes as AAA celebrates a milestone in automotive safety—the 50th anniversary of its Approved Auto Repair Program, which has helped connect millions of drivers with certified repair facilities since 1975.
Critical Maintenance Steps
With fall weather already bringing wet and potentially icy road conditions, AAA recommends drivers focus on several key areas:
Battery health tops the priority list, as cold weather significantly reduces battery performance. Batteries older than three years should be professionally tested, and all batteries should be checked for corrosion and secure mounting.
Tire inspection is equally crucial. Drivers should verify proper inflation and adequate tread depth, with those in snow-prone regions considering the switch to winter tires for improved traction.
Fluid levels—including oil, brake fluid, coolant, and windshield washer fluid—should be checked and topped off as needed to maintain vehicle performance through temperature fluctuations.
Additional essential checks include testing all exterior lights, replacing worn wiper blades, and completing any due oil changes before winter arrives.
Roadside Preparedness
Beyond mechanical maintenance, AAA advises assembling an emergency roadside kit containing blankets, a flashlight, snacks, water, and basic tools. Such preparation can prove invaluable during unexpected breakdowns, particularly in hazardous weather conditions.
