(CALVERT CITY, Ky.) – Garden enthusiasts across the region have another chance to put their green thumbs to the test as Calvert City launches its third annual Homegrown Tomato Contest. The competition welcomes growers of every experience level, from weekend warriors tending their first tomato plant to master gardeners with decades of dirt under their fingernails.

The contest casts a wide net – residency in Calvert City isn’t required, and tomatoes grown in any container or garden plot are eligible. Whether your prize specimen sprouted from a small pot on your porch, a trusty 5-gallon bucket, or good old-fashioned soil, it can compete for top honors.

From July 2 through September 5, contestants can bring their harvest to Holly Nursery in Calvert City for official weighing. There’s no cap on entries, so prolific growers can submit multiple tomatoes throughout the season. After the weigh-in, participants are encouraged to snap a photo and share it on social media with a Calvert City tag to celebrate their gardening achievements.

Three categories will crown champions this year:

  • Biggest Ripe Tomato of Calvert City (exclusively for city residents)
  • Biggest Overall Ripe Tomato (open to all participants)
  • Smallest Ripe Tomato (proving that good things come in small packages)

Winners will receive a $50 Holly Nursery gift card, an exclusive contest t-shirt, and the coveted distinction of reigning tomato champion until next year’s competition.

“The variety never ceases to amaze us – tomatoes in every imaginable shape, size, and color walk through our doors,” explained Ally Thompson from Holly Nursery. “It’s wonderful watching neighbors connect over their shared passion for gardening and the pride they take in their harvest.”

Interested growers can get additional details by calling 270-395-7138 or stopping by Holly Nursery in Calvert City. The clock is ticking for gardeners hoping to cultivate their championship tomato before the September deadline.
