Yates and Lyles lead Marshall County at the KHSAA State Cross Country Championships

Kobey Yates and Addison Lyles paced the Marshall County runners on Saturday in Lexington. Yates finished 10th and Lyles 34th in the state among a field of 561 runners in Class 3A.

The KHSAA State Cross Country Championships were held on Saturday in Lexington at the Kentucky Horse Park. In Class 3A races, 561 student-athletes lined up for the final 5000 meters of the cross country season.

Kobey Yates placed 10th in the state, crossing the line in 16:00.30. Paul Van Laningham from Cooper took the win in 15:19.87.

The rest of the results from the Marshall County boys team came from Daniel Walker-18:02.99 (134), Levi Walker-18:07.94 (140), OwenFutrell-18:21.91 (158), Thatcher Newnum-18:27.95 (165), Jake Fennel-19:11.45 (217) and Jared Gaudy-20:24.48 (262).

As a team, the Marshals placed 21st and with no seniors, Coach Ken Harrison will get the entire team back for next season. Levi Walker was the first eighth grader to cross the finish line on Saturday. He is one of three eighth graders on the team.

Lafayette won the state team title. The top Region 1 team results came from Daviess County in 14th and Apollo finished 16th.

Addison Lyles and Ava Sutherland represented Marshall County in the girl’s race. Lyles finished 34th which was 34 places better than last year’s state race and her time of 20:15.37 was a 53 second improvement on last year’s result. Sutherland ran the 5000 meter course in 22.48.

Addison Moore from Woodford County won the state title with a time of 18:06.82 and the team from Assumption took first. The top Region 1 team results came from Daviess County in 10th and Graves County was 24th.
