Lady Marshals claim 24th region title in penalty kicks over Murray

The Lady Marshals won the Region 1 championship on Thursday over Murray in a game decided on penalty kicks and celebrate the programs 24th title.

Marshall County’s Lady Marshals are the Region 1 Champions for the 24th time in program history. Thursday against Murray High, after a 0-0 game at the end of regulation, it took two overtime periods and penalty kicks to decide a champion.

The Lady Marshals won 3-1 in penalty kicks to earn the 1-0 win and trip to the state tournament. The game was reminiscent of last season’s title game against McCracken County that was decided in penalty kicks with the Lady Marshals on the losing end.

“We would have rather won in regulation or overtime, but we’ve been practicing…we’re pre-set on our first five and they were super consistent the entire year”, Head Coach Michael Boone said in post-game radio comments. “When you’ve got Savannah Dodd in the goal you know she’s going to make at least a couple saves.”

Marshall County and Murray split their regular season matches, which set up the championship game battle between the two teams from the 2nd District.

It was a huge defensive effort by both teams throughout the night. The Lady Marshals pressing the ball forward and getting several shots off, some on goal, near the end of the first half. They came out the aggressor early in the second half before both teams settled into the defensive battle that led to the 0-0 score at the end of regulation.

Two five-minute overtime periods were an extension of the 80 minutes that preceded it and the game would be decided in penalty kicks.

Addi Wall controls the ball direction in the regional championship game against Murray. Wall was selected to the All-Region First Team.

Marshall County went up 2-0 after two rounds on great stops by Savannah Dodd and PKs converted by Addi Wall and Rylee Teague. Murray converted their third-round kick as did Lily Hays to put the Lady Marshals up 3-1.

A must-make fourth round PK by Murray went over the top of the goal and the region championship celebration began for the Lady Marshals for the 24th time.

Marshall County (19-4-1) will host the first round of the Girls Soccer State Tournament on Monday and will meet Region 3 champion Daviess County (13-1-5). They met once this season on September 7 in a game that ended in a 1-1 tie.
