For the second straight year, the Region 1 boys golf title came down to a battle between Marshall County and McCracken County. Wednesday at Calvert City Golf and Country Club, the Mustangs took the title for a second straight year with a team total of 293, winning by 13 strokes over runner-up Marshall County.
Both teams will advance to the sub-state first round at Hopkinsville Country Club on Monday, Sept. 30.
Marshals Head Coach Travis Ross knew after playing McCracken County several times this season they were going to be a bit stronger. Also, a good Paducah Tilghman team would be one to beat out to advance.
“Coming down the stretch, especially on the back nine, I knew it was going to be close between us and Tilghman”, Ross said. “Luckily our guys kind of beared down and focused those last few holes and finished pretty strong. I’m always telling them if they focus on the guys that they’re playing with in their group…if they try to beat the guys they’re playing with…then our team should be in good shape.”
The Marshals finished with a team score of 306, beating out Paducah Tilghman by 10 strokes.
Ryan Stokes led the Marshals in scoring with a 2-over round of 74 and finished fifth overall and Brooks Lamb shot 75 to finish seventh. Paxton Carter shot 78, Kyzer Phillips 79 and Andrew Kimbro 83.
“I feel pretty good”, Coach Ross said on heading to the sub-state round. “We’ve kind of been up and down throughout the season. Went up to All-State last weekend and didn’t have our best stuff. This past week it seems like things are clicking and coming together and so they’ve been playing a little bit better lately. Hopefully everything will come together on Monday at Hopkinsville.”
Landon Hunt led McCracken County with the only under par round of the day. Hunt shot 3-under par 69 to win medalist honors. Jack Farmer and Dallas Vinson each carded 75’s and finish tied for second place. Tanner Knight rounded out the Mustangs scoring with a 78.
